sorry if I you wanted me to write more about my adventures (because I haven't). I just find that that sort of thing doesn't get read that much. I have been writing a lot for the ECSF, and so I might post all of that stuff next time in one big batch.

I also have a bunch of other pictures still that I havent put on my computer.

I am in Chiapas, Mexico now taking Spanish classes and about to start working with an NGO.

I was in Mexico DF for a few days. Here indigenous from some place threated by a government oil project (although Im not positive I understood Eugenio) are camping out in protest.

This is the director of my program and his wife. He is strange (note the pink shirt), but i really like him. They took me in for a few days.

Anyone who wants to live right outside Boston this summer should get in contact with me. My apartment is $340 plus utilities, which go for a total of about 60-70 boneses. Wireless internets!!!!! My room will be open from mid-may through august and two other rooms will be open from june 1 through August. A half-hour bus ride into downtown boston or cambrige. The heart of boston is 15 minutes from the train station 3 blocks from my house. The house is right by the heart of Waltham with Indian, guatamalan, thai, cambodian, asian fusion, mexican, mexico and italian food. Plus grocery yay! Tell me if you are interested asap.

i'm realizing more and more that i am not cut out to be a scholar. my main problem is that i totally suck at reading. i am trying now to read about where agency is understood to lie in conceptions of producer-creator/consumer-speculator in american consumer culture. apparently it is more blurry than in europe, which is made possible by the 'fact' that neither producer or consumer really produces, but actually both are speculator roles. yay postmodernism now we have nothing to believe in. since consumption is privileged as agentive, then we can do things just by consuming? I guess this is what he is saying but i suck at reading so im not really sure. i guess this is what i WANT to hear since i am trying to prove that viagra is sold as masculinity (and masculinity needs to be constantly reasserted) by refilling sex drive thus empowering them (or making them NOT impotent, 'impotence' connoting powerlessness). consumed object:agency::viagra:masculine power?

I have been to the top of the world and the BOTTOM in the last month, and I brought back pictures!

I joined a B52's cover band. We rocked the shit out of Chlomdlondlonerlieys! We will prob be in the justice (brandeis paper) and Ill send a link to that. I originally would never have joined a cover band, but then I was like, fuck integrity, I wanna rawk!!!

Eric came to visit and it was amazing! We went camping. We went to the lake and there was a drowning baby drill and we were good semaritans!

I also went to Lollapalooza in Chicago over the weekend, which was killer. Saul Williams, Blonde Redhead, The Warlocks and Brian Jonestown Massacre were ALL amazing. Pixies were bored playing for 100,000 people and the Walkmen were bored because they played at the same time and everyone went to see the Pixies instead of them. I'm pretty boom-chick-boom-chiked out and listening to burning spear, magnetic fields and hidden cameras.

PLUS Claire came to visit me from philly and it was totally amazing!! We went dancing to reggae and swimming naked with Benji and drank lots of Guinness! I miss her SOOO MUCH already and I might not see her another year. She is the BEST. I'm about to cry now I think.

Plus Eric is coming THIS weekend!!!! I haven't seen him in 7 months and I miss him a ton!!

el jay, stardate thursday

So I just got laid off from my landscaping job today. I would have been totally furious but my last day was supposed to be next week anyway. Apparently it was not profitable to keep me for five more days. As much as I hated being told what to do and performing the most menial tasks, I wish I were working today. Sort of like a prisoner has trouble functioning when he or she is set free I'm kind of freaked out about whast I'm going to do in my immediate future. My project for Grenada still needs finished (embarassingly) so that'll be my focus now.

I stopped posting on el jay after Grenada because I sort of saw how ridiculous it is. It has like the corrupting power 100x that of the american dollar or euro. It seems that it can come to replace real (as opposed to virtual, although a virtual reality is also in many ways 'real') means of communication and become a substitute for them. Drama people wouldnt share with each other, whether its socially unacceptable or difficult to say, seems to come out easy on el jay.

Anyway this is a sort of personal entry, but it is nothing i wouldnt share with people in person. Anyway when I went to the farm today to work my boss was standing there in the drive, stoped me in my car and handed me a paycheck, telling me to go home. As I turned around I passed the group I worked with, all standing around with rosy faces and necks, with sad eyes, speaking in tired voices. I remembered talking to eric blasco last december one night at brandeis when snow was falling and saying that I thought that quiet night was ushering in a new period in my life. I think I was right. I hope it ended today when I drove away, seeing my co-workers stand there, awkardly not shooting me a glance in the last time I would ever see them. It has been an isolated time when I have had to figure stuff out for myself, especially in Grenada. Some people would call it a period of "self-discovery" but I realize this is not only cliche but also bullshit. Every new thing I have found out and every experience I have had has only given me more and more questions upon which to work. However this does not mean that I am losing my footing or plummeting into a nihilistic abyss. At the same time I have been thinking a lot about having good faith, having guts and living passionately. I feel like I am coming closer and closer to a more defined value system that I have consciously created for myself. I would like to think that I am taking the long and hard way. I hope that in the end I will be stronger and more durable than those who think that there are easy answers and that wire halos make them angels.

So I have been back int he United States for a little but now. This is gonna be my last live journal I think, at least for a while, for a number of reasons.

Anyway I miss Grenada x70n5 and coming home (to Brandeis, then New York/New Jersey and finally to Pennsylavania) was a pretty crazy transition. I had a weird time getting used to islated/privileged Brandeis bullshit but luckily I was staying with some awesome kids so i didn't explode.

My mom got dog while i was gone. It ate my room.

Since I've been taking care of family stuff, finding an apartment and figuring out brandeis for next semester I have done little on my project so far, which is freaking me out.

I got a 45hr/week job landscaping which is pretty hard work. Today I installed one of those invisible dog fences today for a woman who was loaded and diet pills and who ate dog treats. I'm fixing to stay with it but I was offered a job as a cook about a half hour ago and Im thinking about doing that instead. I dunno, I really like working outside during the day.

Being home is not what I would have chosen for myself this summer. Good thing I'm equipped with some sweet reggae, skanking skills and PMA.

Hey if you know any sweet books you should tell me so i can read them this summer.

After 15 in depth interviews with rural underprivileged in Grenada, I have come up with a basic theoretical framework for my report/project, which will probably be about 60 pages it looks like. I guess It all depends if I single space!!!

Anyhow I was walking to Rainbow Inn to see Dessima tonight and I found a chick stuck in a ditch. The mother chicken was at the edge, freaking out that her baby was trapped. I went down in the ditch to get it but the mommy chicken attacked me. So my friend Chris was riding by on his bike and I called hime ova. I got between the chicken and the chick and he chased the chicken away while I rescued the cute baby chick! Then I ate chicken for dinner.

Dessima has freakewd out on me twice inn the last four days. Half of me feels really guilty. Today she yelled at me because I went through i file I wasnt supposed to in her oficina. I knew I wasn't supposed to be there, but I was wicked curious about what could possibly be inside. That's all I remember about that until auntie Dessima came to me a few hours later all furious and wanting to know who went through her file. I backtracked and yup, it had been me, I remembered. When I went into her oficina there was the file sitting wide open on her desk, I musta left it that way. She gave me this huge lecture about how my attitude and behaviour was so out of line since I've been here. I said it wasn't fair to judge me based on one or two mistakes. I sort of feel guilty because I could hvae come accross something personal (ie: information about someone being raped, etc) but at the same time a little part of my heart thought it was totally awesome that I had a tude.

Only four more days. Wow. I am going to cry like a baby when I get to the airport.

I just finished off some warm milk with black sage. According to Terry it is supposed to clear your veins. Ok I'm going to ruin a suprise for some people. I've put on weight in Grenada. I'm not fat, or even close, but I'm visibly bigga. It feels pretty cool too.

I went with Johnny and his friends Tiger, Shandy, Don and a guy I've forgotten the name of, to a bashment on a small island off the north coast. We drove up and a man came over in a motorboat. He had no teeth and sat at the back of the boat, his chest out and his grin huge, bellowing in Caribbean tongues that were incomprehensible to me. We waded out into the surf and threw our stuff on board and were transported over, being lifted up by waves and then droping down into the ocean. There were about fifty, some had been there all weekend and all were extremely high. Some Rastas too. Also a Peace Corps friend of mine was there. He was smoking the entire time and had sun glasses on. It is easier to visibly see when white people are high because of how red it gets around our eyes, so he was wearing sunglasses.

Me and Johnns and friends wrapped fishing line around bottles and put bait on the hooks. I walked out to a rock piling and cast off a few times but caught nothing. I stepped on some black spiny sea urchins but miraculously wasn't jooked bad. Tiger caught a big eel. Everyone surrounded it and we laid it on a big rock. The following events reminded me of the movie "Aguire, Wrath of God" where the conquistadores find some natives. They ask them if they have heard of the Bible. When the natives don't understand they are stabbed anbd thrown off the boat. When Johnny's friends saw the eel they didn't really know what to do with it. Shandy would poke it and the thing would twitch and they would all scream. Johnny came and hit it with a rock. Then one person suggested we get the hook out of its mouth. No one wanted to touch it, but someone had a knife and cutting a line down it's side seemed like a good idea so Johnny did that. After he exposed the guts he sort of stabbed its head a few times. They were still afraid to touch it and one of them found a stick and sort of threw the dying thing toward the water. It didn't make it far enough. I suggested we eat it, but they all shivered at the idea. So I picked it up and threw the thing into theocean. Weird.

I guess that is not so much like "Aguire, Wrath of God," but I thought it was really creepy that because they were freaked out by the thing, the logical conclusion was to kill it as soon as possible.

We went back to the bashment and took some beers. They got a little drunk and I was sort of tipsy. The driver of the boat was drunk and was driving the boat around in circles halway between the island and the mainland. It was funny because you could hear him hooting and hollering from the beach. He finally made it to the beach and we waded out and tossed our stuff in and were carried back as the sun went down over palm trees, coloring the sky pink, purple and orange. funfun.

Plus I found out how to make my own ringtones on my cell phone. You type in the notes and then it plays in beeps. My new ringtone is the introduction to Airbag, Radiohead.

On Friday afternoon I left St. Andrew's Parish for the capitol to meet Matt. He drove me down to Aquarium, which is at the very bottom of the island near the airport. We talked about managing GRENED because he does that sort of thing and I went diving. He couldn't go below the water because he blew out his ear canal while scuba diving last weekend and he permanently damaged his hearing or something. Anyway diving by yourself must be the most relaxing activity ever (besides gliding). I swam out to the end of the reef, held my breath, dove down a few meters to the floor and anchored myself to the reef. It is my favoriteInterpol reef I have seen. It is all kinds of brilliant colors and has lots of pretty fish. I just sat there, looking through my mask as little purple fish swirled around me and all the stress from the week seemed pretty trivial. At the bottom there is coral that looks like pink trees and it sways back and forth with the tide and is totally hypnotic. The bottom of the ocean is quiet, but you can sort of hear the waves breaking.

Today some kids had a gathering at Dessima's Inn and but not many kids showed up because I don't think it was planned well. However one girl, who is trying to convert me to Jesus, was there. She is pretty young. When she explained how I would feel in hell as I burned for all eternity she used some Disney references which I thought was pretty funny. I recalled the Dylan lyric, "To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark/It's easy to see without looking too far/That not much/Is really sacred.." Anyway I felt sort of ridiculous sitting around at this get together as these adolescent girls mocked every word I said and imitated me saying "I'm a bad boy" to god on judgement day. So I left.

On my way home I ran into my neighbor Geraldine and her sister in a pasture. Somehow that conversation turned to Christianity also. It was interesting that neither person had ever met an "atheist" before, but they had heard of them. They did not push there values on me and I was glad because I said what I thought about Jesus and they were cool about it. I don't think they had ever heard the opinion of someone who didn't believe in god. I said I didn't disbelieve I just had no reason to believe. They said I was just confused. Maybe. Just a little confused about how I feel about Christians in other cultures.

I am eating the best plantain ever for breakfast right as I type this.

So I haven't talked about working at GRENED much, but I almost quit yesterday which would be really funny, seeing I have 8 days left and I live next door. I was getting some tapes ready to go to an interview and printing out informed consent sheets when Ms. Teague told me to be in Grenville like in 10 minutes. I said like "I'll do what I can" but the printer jammed and I had all kinds of problems. I had to have my stuff ready before I went down because I was going to catch a bus there out to Conference to meet this woman. So I didn't go and Ms. Teague was screaming my name from the office while Im in my apartment because she's too lazy to come over and talk to my face. I eventually went back and she was screaming at me because I didn't go and i was saying I never told anyone I had time, Then she starts blaming me for everything and I was like "I'm not dealing with you anymore." I guess I'll extend my work for another coupla days just cuz I still want to get credit.

But honestly my bosses here are a little bit crazy. I don't know if you ave seen the BBC show The Office but it is sort of like that. They blame me for all financial problems and take advantage of the authority they have to push me around all the time. They are uber concerned about trivial things like how "professional" the office looks while their programs get worse. Also whenever we have events or forums with the youth they always alienate the younger crowd with their self laudatory speeches about the greatness of traditional values and how kids should accept them. Nobody wants to hear that. They want to smoke weed, have sex, act tough, get blinged out and listent to American hip hop. You can't try to put these kids into a 40 year old mould and expect them to fill it. Instead you have to realize how culture is changing according to the global economic order and create positive alternatives to the options kids have these days.

I must say it is really disturbing to be in the field and in the office at the same time because you can see everything that they are doing wrong. While they sit around the office showing off about how great they are, people are still hungry and unemployed and no one seems to be doing anything about it.

Even though I've been happy here and I have made friends with two guys and a girl I work with, my experience with GRENED has been pretty negative. My superiors don't really respect me, to be honest.

Anyway, next time I do this kind of thing, I will work with a radical group, or at least one that is rational.
